I love that we get to portray people with long-term recovery living full, vibrant lives and who choose to stay sober in the face of heartbreak by rallying around each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-363-1024x682.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-363-1024x682.png 1024w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-363-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-363-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-363-1536x1024.png 1536w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-363.png 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although \u201cMom\u201d sets out to be \u201chopeful\u201d when showing its heroines Christy (Anna Faris) and Bonnie (Allison Janney) committed to their recovery, it does not do so at the sake of realism. Characters are constantly faced with struggles, and at times temptations, that challenge their sobriety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"438\" src=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-364.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13280\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-364.png 780w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-364-300x168.png 300w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-364-768x431.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key second-season arc saw Bonnie being prescribed painkillers after an injury, which forced both women to confront how strong their demons still were. Bonnie relapsed, but Christy was so determined not to that she threw her focus into helping someone else. Later that same season, both women were tested again when the woman Christy was sponsoring (Jill, played by Jaime Pressly) got out of rehab, asked the women to live with her and they saw just how often she was prone to relapses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"740\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-365.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13281\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-365.png 740w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-365-300x169.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMom\u201d isn\u2019t just about Christy and Bonnie\u2019s journeys with sobriety. By making their support group a major setting of the show, the characters who share their stories \u2014 from regular players including Pressly, Mimi Kennedy and Beth Hall to those who have come in and out, such as Missi Pyle, Mary Pat Gleason and Leonard Roberts \u2014 are able to reflect diverse voices and experiences. Characters\u2019 addictions come in many forms (alcohol, pills, cocaine, gambling) and in the case of Pressly\u2019s Jill, her addiction has transferred from drugs and alcohol to food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-366-1024x682.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-366-1024x682.png 1024w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-366-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-366-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-366-1536x1024.png 1536w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-366.png 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cResearch is very important,\u201d says co-creator and executive producer Chuck Lorre. \u201cIt\u2019s important to stay honest and true to what these issues are really about, not to make things up necessarily. That would be unfair \u2014 that would be like cheating. Executive producer Nick Bakay and series star Faris both adamantly report that they often hear positive feedback not only from people who are in recovery but also some recovery organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe get people coming up to us on the street who have personal experiences [and] it\u2019s incredibly flattering,\u201d Faris says. \u201cIt\u2019s an honor and it\u2019s really moving when our show touches people in ways that I couldn\u2019t have imagined.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-368-1024x683.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-368-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-368-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-368-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-368.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bakay feels the strong positive reaction comes from the fact that the show leans so heavily into being about everyday women just trying to better their lives. \u201c[Christy and Bonnie] have had no leg up [and] came from very, very difficult origins, and one of the things I like about our show is that it\u2019s not like you get sober on our show and your life is just a bed of roses,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s hard work every day and they still get knocked down but they do get up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-369-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-369-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-369-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-369-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-369.png 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it is undoubtedly also because those who work on \u201cMom\u201d aren\u2019t just telling fictional stories but also extending their support of those trying to get and stay sober into the real world. In 2016 the team behind \u201cMom\u201d worked with U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek H. Murthy to produce and air a special PSA to raise awareness about the increasing epidemic of drug overdoses. At the time, Murthy stated overdoses killed more Americans than car crashes and reminded everyone of the importance of \u201ctreatment, compassion and support\u201d for anyone struggling with addiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-370-1024x512.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-370-1024x512.png 1024w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-370-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-370-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-370.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s a trio the show knows extremely well.
