Illinois and Missouri are next with 105 reports each. Mississippi recorded 100 preliminary reports. This stands in comparison to last year&#8217;s stats at the end of May\u2014 when the top five states were Texas, Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri and Oklahoma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biggest change since last year is for Iowa, which had over 100 tornado reports in 2024 and only 11 in 2025. Meanwhile, Mississippi had only 11 reports last year but has 100 this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"626\" height=\"328\" src=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-93.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5903\" srcset=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-93.png 626w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-93-300x157.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 626px) 100vw, 626px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Over 1,000 tornadoes this year, 260 above normal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of May 31, the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has logged 1,042 preliminary filtered tornado reports nationwide\u2014260 more than the historical average of 782.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"628\" height=\"324\" src=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-94.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5904\" srcset=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-94.png 628w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-94-300x155.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pacific Northwest, Wyoming, West Virginia and New England have had no tornado reports this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5 major tornado outbreaks drove the surge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of 2025\u2019s activity has been driven by\u00a0four major tornado outbreaks in March and April, followed by\u00a0a week-long outbreak in May. The highest days with tornadoes reported have been as follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2022 March 14-16:&nbsp;<\/strong>182 reports<br><strong>\u2022 March 30-31:&nbsp;<\/strong>56 reports<br><strong>\u2022 April 2-3:&nbsp;<\/strong>112 reports<br><strong>\u2022 April 4-7:&nbsp;<\/strong>56 reports<br><strong>\u2022 May 15-16:&nbsp;<\/strong>77 reports<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"631\" height=\"356\" src=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-95.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5905\" srcset=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-95.png 631w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-95-300x169.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 631px) 100vw, 631px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><em>A likely tornado tears through Blodgett, Missouri, on Friday, May 17.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Counting tornadoes: What the numbers mean<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The figures reported here are preliminary filtered tornado reports submitted to the SPC. These numbers reflect all reported tornado sightings but are subject to change. Multiple sightings may be merged into one tornado track, while damage surveys may uncover previously unknown twisters. Tornadoes that cross state lines are counted only in the state where their tracks began. During the summer and fall seasons, tornado activity wanes, typically spreading northward across the nation.
