Ending the trade in China is a realistic goal, although progress has been slow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-1271-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7741\" srcset=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-1271-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-1271-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-1271-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-1271.png 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notably, in 2020, the Chinese cities of Shenzhen and Zhuhai implemented bans on dog and cat meat consumption, and China&#8217;s Ministry of Agriculture officially reclassified dogs as companion animals rather than livestock. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"666\" src=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-1272.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7742\" srcset=\"https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-1272.png 500w, https:\/\/topkeynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-1272-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Local Chinese animal welfare groups continue to advocate for nationwide legislation to ban the dog and cat meat trade.
