In a scene straight out of a nature documentary, a Southern African Python — one of the continent’s largest non-venomous snakes — was discovered basking peacefully near the M19 highway in New Germany, KwaZulu-Natal. The astonishing find left even seasoned snake handlers stunned, as the area hasn’t seen a wild python in decades.
🐍 “There Are No Pythons Here… Or So I Thought”
Initially alerted by the local municipality, a snake expert was skeptical:
“There’s no pythons there, it will be a Black Mamba,” he assumed, referencing a more common species in the region.
But when he arrived on-site, tongs in hand, ready for a venomous encounter, the reality was far more unexpected — a massive Southern African Python, estimated at 3.3 to 3.5 meters long, was sunbathing in the bushes between the M19 and the Otto Volek Rd off-ramp.
🧤 A Wild Struggle in the Bush
What was meant to be an easy catch turned into a mini wrestling match. The python bolted into dense bush, prompting a tense chase. Just as it began slipping from the handler’s grip, a local helper named Joseph jumped in to secure the tail, allowing the expert to grab the snake’s head and safely subdue it.
“I wouldn’t have caught it if it wasn’t for Joseph’s help,” the handler noted. “It’s a big snake, and the photo doesn’t do it justice.”
🕵️♂️ Where Did It Come From?

Pet? Unlikely — Southern African Pythons are protected species and illegal to keep.
