Themba and Albert: An Unlikely Friendship Forged in Loss
In the heart of South Africa’s Sanbona Wildlife Sanctuary, a story unfolded that would touch hearts around the world—a tale of grief, healing, and the unexpected power of friendship.
After the tragic loss of his mother, a baby elephant named Themba was left orphaned and alone. With no herd to guide or comfort him, the sanctuary stepped in, offering care, shelter, and hope.

Despite the sanctuary’s best efforts, Themba spent his first week without a surrogate or companion—an especially painful experience for an elephant, a species known for its deep emotional bonds.
To ease his loneliness, the team introduced an unlikely candidate: Albert, a sheep.

At first, the pairing seemed implausible. Albert, bewildered and frightened by the giant calf, retreated into a cave for nearly 12 hours. But the next morning brought an unexpected turn—Albert cautiously emerged, and Themba, sensing a friend, refused to leave his side.
